This memorial weekend we went to Munising, Michigan. Munising, located in the Upper Peninsula (U.P.) of Michigan, is nestled in the heart of the Hiawatha National Forest, is the gateway to the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and also features Grand Island National Recreational Area. It’s a 5 hour drive from Milwaukee. We reached Munising around 7.30pm on Friday. We checked into Alger falls motel. This is a pet –friendly motel and the main reason we chose it.
With the evening light still available we drove to Wagner falls. There is a short paved trail that leads to the falls. There were pretty wildflowers growing all around.
We had dinner at Sydney’s restaurant and enjoyed their fresh broiled Lake Trout.
Next morning, we woke up early and headed to Horse shoe falls. This is a privately-run waterfalls with a trout pond and well-groomed grounds. The entrance fee is $12 per vehicle. Nadia spent a lot of time at the falls, collecting fallen leaves and rocks. She also enjoyed feeding the trout and ducks.
After that, we headed to Munising Falls. The water volume was quite low however there was some lovely late mornig late on the falls.
We took the Pictured rocks cruise on Saturday, my birthday at 7pm. They have a air conditioned room where you can keep your furry friends. The evening light was beautiful on the pictured rocks. We saw Jasper falls, bridal veil falls and had a pleasant time. Later we went to Dogpatch for dinner.
Sunday was mostly spent hiking at Memorial falls. There is a trail that leads to the back of the falls and it was a wonderful experience. Nadia and Ozzie loved it.
Drive towards Sand Point beach and keep driving till you go past the park hq. There is a cul-de-sac which ends up in a private beach. We spent 2-3 hours at the beach after lunch before driving back home.
If you are looking for a long-weekend trip away from home, this definitely fits the bill.
